 Herbal medicine has been used worldwide for thousands of years. It has been used by all cultures in the East and the West, and was the dominant form of medicine on the planet until the last century. Most of today’s prescription medications are made by taking the effective component of a plant and isolating it. This is both good and bad. The good part is that prescription medications can treat some diseases faster than traditional herbal methods. The negative of this is that these synthetic medications are so concentrated and powerful that the side effects are sometimes worse than the benefits. This results in thousands of deaths occurring annually due to the use of these prescription medications.
Because herbs are typically prescribed in combination, particularly Chinese herbs, the different ingredients of a formula balance each other, and they undergo a mutual synergy which increases their efficacy and enhances safety.
